Techo Hun Sen Addresses Escalating Cambodia–Thailand Border Incidents

Phnom Penh, August 8, 2025 — Former Prime Minister and current Senate President of Cambodia, Techo Hun Sen, issued a statement on his social media today, addressing recent developments in the ongoing border conflict with Thailand.

In his message, Techo Hun Sen expressed reluctance to comment publicly on the matter but emphasized the importance of transparency to prevent misunderstandings by the international community and to ensure the Thai leadership remains aware of the situation. He highlighted a concerning shift in the nature of hostilities along the Cambodia–Thailand border, which has transitioned from traditional weaponry to alternative forms of confrontation.

"At first glance, this may seem like a trivial or even humorous matter," Techo Hun Sen stated. "But upon deeper examination, it is a serious issue. "

He warned that if these incidents are not curtailed, they could lead to the use of more advanced weapons, jeopardizing the ceasefire agreement painstakingly negotiated by Cambodian and Thai authorities, with active mediation from Malaysia, China, and the United States.

As a proactive measure, Techo Hun Sen called on the Cambodian government to issue immediate orders to military forces to halt the use of such objects and to prevent further escalation. He also appealed to the Thai leadership to issue similar directives to their military, emphasizing the critical need to cease any use of weapons that could undermine the fragile peace.

The statement included images supporting his appeal, which illustrate the ongoing incidents involving the use of slingshots and other non-traditional weapons.

Techo Hun Sen concluded by reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability along the border and urged both sides to exercise restraint and uphold the existing ceasefire.
